Announching...Daily drawing

I have been neglecting my blogging of late, even though I am busy Illustrating away (honest!). So I will try from now on to post a little something every day. A daily homage to the 'Illustrated guides to the world' and books of fairy-tales and nursery rhymes and everything else that inspired me when I was a much smaller Illustrator crayoning all over the walls. Number 1 of the 'Creature Compendium': Blackbird, because I can see one out of my window right now.

The Big Lebowski

I am enjoying my minimalist movie posters at the moment, so here is my tribute to The Big Lebowski; a fairly odd film that I saw for the first time not too long ago. I wanted to capture the whole mistaken identity/mixed up lives thing using the rugs that both Lebowskis are so obsessed with.

I've been away working on some new Illustrations for an children's book that I couldn't show for a while, but here they are at last! David and Goliath is also entered in this month's flair competition.

Soon I will be Invincible

Today a book cover design for the funny and occasionally bittersweet 'Soon I will be Invincible' by Austin Grossman.

The Book tells the intertwining story of a hero and a super-villain in alternating chapters. I thought it would be fun if each character's story started at opposite ends of the book, then you would would read towards the middle where the characters meet at the climax of the novel. To read the other side of the story, you would just flip the book over. I liked the whole play on opposing sides, and the way the physical act of getting closer to the other person's story as you read on matched the plot. (I can't explain much more without spoiling it I'm afraid :-) ) Also each of the lead characters are so good it seemed a fun way to show them both off.

From top to bottom: Flat cover art, Fatale as lead character, Dr Impossible as lead character. You could display it depending on your affiliation I suppose!

Worth a read for sure, especially if you are a comic book/superhero fan.

Drive

Hello, I am back from my travels and back at my sketchbook. Saw Drive the other day and really enjoyed it, especially all those neon colours! Here’s some sketches of a poster design I’m thinking about for it.

Hello hello! I finished reading ‘Soon I will be Invincible’ by Austin Grossman today, and enjoyed it very much. Here is my exceptionally rough sketch for a cover idea. I’m going away for a few days soon, but I hope to final version up not long after I get back. Until then, this little scribble shall have to do! :-)

Drink ye harpooners!

Another cover today; one of the all-time classics, Moby Dick. I now know more about whales than I ever thought possible! I’ll post my next cover as soon as I have finished reading the next book- only got a few chapters left :-)
